Message from the Chairman
Kung Hei Fat Choi.
Now the year of the Tiger has started we can build on our successful campaign in 2009 but to do that we need to train! The weather is starting to get warmer and as we head into March, races are fast approaching so we need to see more people out on the water if we want to win races.
On Sat March 6th HKOCC will be running the VRC time trial for OC1/2’s and surf ski’s out of Stanley.
Sun March 14th HKOCC will be holding the annual Big Beaufort Challenge
We also have a small group from the club off to Fiji on a paddle safari over Easter.
The Yacht Clubs Head of the Bay race is on April 18th followed by the National Sprints at the end of April. The latter’s date is still TBC but we need to defend the King & Queen of the Bay titles.
If you are thinking about racing in Hamilton Island we people need to commit now as we will be booking flights in March. The girls are super organised and are leading the way so guys who’s up for it?
Hammo is one of the premier OC events in the world. There’s loads of racing from sprints, a 16km marathon, OC1 & OC2 races which all culminating in the Hamilton Island Cup on the Sunday which is a 42km change race followed by one of the best paddling parties ever. The race is from the 24th to 27th June so 12 weeks of hard training will produce good results.
Coach Jo Orgill has put a program together incorporating technique sessions with long distance pieces and interval training to improve fitness. However, for people to improve they need to turn up to as many sessions as possible to benefit from the progressive nature of the program. We all get sloppy with technique and the drills Jo has prepared will get rid of those bad habits that have crept in especially from those that like to go solo on their OC1’s!
It’s time to ramp it up people so look forward to seeing everyone in Stanley on the water.
Steve
